The problem we saw.
Most lettuce in Chicago grocery stores travels over 1,500 miles from California or Arizona. By the time it reaches the shelf, it's already losing nutrients, flavor, and shelf life. The food system is efficient at scale — but terrible at freshness.
We started Ojas Farms to fix that. By growing hydroponically right here in Chicago, we eliminate the supply chain delay. Our greens go from harvest to your kitchen in hours, not weeks.
How we grow.
Hydroponics means growing plants without soil. Instead, roots sit in a nutrient-rich water solution, with LED lights providing the exact spectrum plants need for optimal growth. Every variable — temperature, humidity, pH, nutrients — is controlled.
The result: plants that grow 3x faster, use 90% less water, need zero pesticides, and are harvested at peak nutrition. No weather dependency. No seasonal gaps. No compromise.
What we believe.
Fresh food is a right, not a luxury. Good greens shouldn't cost a fortune or require a trip to a specialty store. And growing them shouldn't deplete the planet's resources.
We believe urban farming is the future — not as a trend, but as a necessity. Cities consume most of the world's food. They should produce more of it. Ojas Farms is our small part of that shift.
Our Values
What guides every decision.
Radical Freshness
We harvest to order. If it's not crisp enough to snap, we don't send it. Greens should be alive when they leave the farm.
No Shortcuts
No pesticides, no synthetic growth hormones, no preservatives. Just water, nutrients, light, and care. We eat what we grow — and so do our families.
Local First
Every dollar spent on local food stays in the community. We partner with Chicago restaurants, markets, and households to build a food system that works at city scale.
Our Journey
From idea to harvest.
The Question
Why does the freshest lettuce in Chicago travel 1,500 miles? There had to be a better way.
The Research
Months of studying hydroponic systems, nutrient profiles, LED spectrums, and controlled environment agriculture. The science was clear — it works.
The Build
Building the first growing channels, testing water chemistry, calibrating lights. The first crop was a single tray of basil — and it worked.
Growing Forward
Today we grow a rotating selection of greens, herbs, and microgreens — supplying households and restaurants across Chicago. And we're just getting started.
